The Presbyterian Church USA’s Brief Statement of Faith has this (and more) to say about the Spirit:
The same Spirit
who inspired the prophets and apostles
rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture,
engages us through the Word proclaimed,
claims us in the waters of baptism,
feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation,
and calls women and men to all ministries of the church.
Have you ever had that niggling feeling that you’re supposed to do something? That maybe God wants you to do something? Throughout history, God has called to varied and unexpected people to be a part of showing love, teaching the word, guarding the vulnerable. Most of them didn’t listen . . . at least at first. Jeremiah says, “I’m just a boy . . . just a kid . . . too young.” God responds, “Oh hush,” and sends him on his way to become one of the major prophets for Israel.
This week, we continue our worship series: We’ve Got Spirit! Specifically, we will look at the role that the Holy Spirit plays in inspiring us and in calling to us to be a part of God’s ministries in the world. Let us join together in wrestling with how we know when a call comes from God and how we can set aside our excuses and follow.
- Focal Scripture: Jeremiah 1:4-10
- Sermon Title: “Roll Call”
I’ve got Spirit; yes, I do! I’ve got Spirit; how ‘bout you?
