This week we celebrate Baptism of the Lord Sunday. The story of Jesus’ baptism in Luke has very little to do with the actual event and is more of a preamble to the event, courtesy of John the Baptist. Jesus is baptized into a tradition of radical self-reflection and repentance and commitment to justice. He is baptized by a man the government deems a troublemaker. What does this preamble say about how our baptisms impact our call to discipleship? What shared story are we baptized into?
Jesus’ baptism marked the beginning of his adult ministry. It seems fitting, therefore, that we will take a moment to remember and celebrate our own baptisms (or the invitation to baptism if that is where you are), and we will ordain and install our next slate of Elders: Callie Thweatt, Elizabeth Adams, Jennifer Beck, and Bob Beard. Join us as we pray that the spirit will infuse them and their ministries at DHPC.
- Focal Scripture – Luke 3:7-22
- Sermon Title – “Well, I’ll be Dammed”
It will be a joy to mark the beginning of this new year with a remembrance of God’s promises. I look forward to worshiping with you,
