This week, we continue our worship series: Things the Bible Doesn’t Say by investigating the half-truth: God helps those who help themselves.
We live in a society in which gumption and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps are valued. But does God really dole out Lexuses (Lexui?) to those who are the most hard working? Is poverty and injustice God’s punishment for the lazy? Our scriptures are filled with the abundance of God’s grace and God’s special preference for the downtrodden would indicate that this platitude is faulty at best, more likely, dangerous and perpetuating of racism and other stigmatizing stereotypes.
What does the Bible actually say about God’s response to hard work and who is worthy of God’s blessing? Join us this Sunday to learn together
- Scripture: Leviticus 19:9-10
- Sermon: “Things the Bible Doesn’t Say: God Helps Those who Help Themselves”
Susan Rutherford will offer a solo for our anthem this week, as we continue to celebrate the musical gifts of our congregation members over the summer.
I look forward to worshipping with you,
